Nyder: The man, the myth, the restaurant

Historia et Apologia

Who am I: I'm London (UK) based, female, and working in the creative and research industries (simultaneously and in parallel).

What's a Nyder:  Nyder is the memorably sinister villain of the classic Doctor Who story "Genesis of the Daleks,"played by the inimitable Mr Peter Miles. Also Welsh for "snake," and Saami for "shaman" (OK, they spell it 'najder', but apparently it's pronounced the same).

What's the Connection: In the late 1990s, I was a regular captioner on the website Spinnwebe, which used to host the Dysfunctional Family Circus among other things. I initially submitted  under a variety of pseudonyms, but "Nyder" was the one under which my first caption was accepted, so I took it as a sign and stuck with it. Later I expanded its use to other websites and forums, though I don't use it so much any more (see below).

And The Website's Name: Stan Xhiao, another Spinnwebe captioner, suggested it around 1999, when I was setting the thing up. As well as Nyder, I also like diners , so it worked.

Does Peter Miles Know: Subsequent to setting up this website, I met the man, and we actually hit it off quite well; we still work together sometimes. I showed him the website in 2002, and he found the whole thing rather amusing.

What's the State of Play: This site was very active from 1999 till about 2003, when the usual sorts of things happened: me getting a job, the Web going all 2.0,  Spinnwebe undergoing a drastic reformatting, and so on. Now pretty much all that gets regularly updated is the blog and LGB Who.  I don't want to take the site down, since 1) those bits are still active; 2)  evidently some people still like some bits of it that I'm pretty much finished with (in particular, the dinosaurs seem to have a fan following); and 3) there are other bits of it that I do still update from time to time, but it's less an active pursuit than once it was. Still, if this happens to be your first time through, enjoy it.

The Last Word: If you want anything more by way of explanation, you could try emailing nydermail atte nyder dotte comme, but you may not get a serious answer.
